Bongo Fury

My Bongo has started to make a horrible noise when I turn right at roundabouts. Its has gotten worse over the last few weeks, and I am wondering if it is the new tires on the front. Its running ok, I just done 1000Km this month in it, but I was worried the last few days last week on my way back home.

Its a 4WD SGL5

How do you check diff windup? Can it be a belt for the pump for the power steering? When going straight there is no noise or sign or trouble, its not a problem going left, its just turning right...

Any Ideas?

Check your CV joints - they're the usual culprits when the noise is only when turning.

how to check them? and are they expensive to replace? Will it fail an MOT with this problem?

You will usually find that the rubber boot around the joint has split and the grease has come out. Never done them on a Bongo, but not too expensive normally. I believe they do come into the MOT - at least I seem to remember having failed one on split CV boots.

Well it is going in on Saturday for the MOT. I will let them tell me the score.

Also check power-steering-fluid level.

I did that thanks. I had the oil changed a month ago, and the garage said the Autobox/power steering was leaking. They did not know which as they both use the same intercooler, and this was the leak point. They tightened it all up, and said it might have just shook the nuts loose as big diesels can do that.

I added a Litre to the tank as I was low on the stick. Well I checked that level first on hearing the noise, even bought new fluid, but it had not dropped at all from when the garage did their thing. I was thinking it was the power steering myself, and my next thought was either the front diff or the power steering pump. But it makes sense that it is just the CV joint, I have had new drop links, and anti roll bar bushes and new front tires fitted in the last month, and I guess I am still flushing out the previous wear and tear.

Glad you're getting it sorted. Should be a nice reliable motor when you've finished.

It sounds like the nearside CV joint hippo, as franco said...Check your wheelarch for grease splatter. Mine went a year or so ago,due to a split CV boot losing too much grease...

Your garage is talking BS I fear, power steering & autobox do not share the same "intercooler" - http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... 1of02.html - PS is just a pump, reservoir & rack. Completely seperate systems. They do use the same fluid however.
You added a litre of what to which tank? if you had to add a litre to the power steering reservoir under the drivers seat that's a big leak.
If it was the Autobox, then you need to check the level after a run with hand & footbrake on, range slowly through all the gears & then check the level (& colour & smell) in D.
The autobox has a cooler in the bottom of the radiator.
The intercooler behind & below the radiator is to cool the air being forced out by the turbo before going to the air inlet manifold.
If you grasp your front driveshafts firmly, you may be able to "feel" if there's any movement/wear by trying to wiggle them.

hmm, I added a litre of auto box fluid. Its still where I topped it up to. I assumed the steering rack used the same fluid from what I was told. I did the check in D after a run, it showed full when cold and engine off, but it was below min when in D and warm. I must go looking for the power steering reservoir then. I bought more of the same fluid if it needs topping up. I will have a look tonight under the seat.

You do learn a lot on this Forum, I love it!
Just about to delve under the seats now, getting a bit paranoid.

Do you replace them in pairs? Do both sides at the same time?

I just replaced the offending CV joint, as it had failed due to a lack of lubrication because of a split Cv boot. I did however have both boots replaced as a precation.

It'd probably be wise to replace both cv joints if one had failed from wear and tear, in which case the opposite joint wouldn't be far behind in terms of wear.

That's the exact reason i advocate checking the level "hot" and "live"...For a true reading... You did add a dexron ATF,not the "mercon" type hippo? All ATF's arent the same....

Same for the power steering fluid, dexron type. (power steering fluid bottle is under driver's seat also)
