Bongo Fury

Hi,
the exhaust back box has sheared off at the inlet and dropped onto the road
I have recovered it bit don't know if it can be repaired.

Does anyone know of someone in Poole/Bournemouth area that can look at it this afternoon.

Looks like it's too late to order a spare for tomorrow, and we're off camping for the Bank Holiday weekend.

They ALL do that - it's a crap design, mine did the same and I was stupid enough to replace it with another one.

Just leave the box off for now and find a decent accessory shop (not Halfords!) who sell aftermarket back boxes, my local one sells them for about £35 and see if a local garage will weld one on for you.

Either that or just get a length of straight pipe welded on instead - Bongos aren't that loud without the back box - it's even said they go better too.

Get the mounting bracket cut off the old box and fitted to the new silencer/tailpipe.

I won't ever fit a new standard back box to mine again.

Hi Scanner, thanks for that advice, I'll see if one of the local welding guys can do me a temp repair in the morning.

Interesting that you say the back box isn't really needed, the drive home sans back box was no louder other than th evibration of the loose middle pipe.

Just get a length of straight through pipe welded on - I think it was vanvliet who got through 2 MOTs with just a length of flexi pipe instead of a back box.

The turbo absorbs and "chops up" a lot of the noise energy in any case.

Mine did exactly the same so I bought one on evil bay for around £63.00 delivered and took it to my local garage, the owner looked at it and said, "why bother, I could have put a straight piece in, makes no difference" but why then did these clever little japanese engineers put a back box on, daft eh.

Dunno beats me as well - but given the cost and the frequency with which they break it's a nice little earner for somebody isn't it?

Lots of things are put on cars to meet all sorts of regulations that have to be met to sell them but are totally useless once they've been sold.

EGR for instance it may reduce a little bit of nox, but at what cost to the engine?

The Bongo back box is over large, too heavy and woefully badly designed - why would anybody want to replace it in the sure knowledge it will just break again?
