hi all new member could anyone tell me what size power inverter i would need for a set of hair straighteners 120w her indoors wont go anywhere without them

Welcome to the forum, you sure it's 120w?, you'll need an inverter with a slightly bigger output than the power rating of the appliance to allow for losses, a 300w inverter should do it, but I may be wrong, go for the biggest you can afford. If you get a 1000w one which should come in at under £100, it'll boil a small kettle (check the kettle power rating & have the engine running), but not at the same time as the straighteners.
I got some Babyliss gas straighteners, run off little gas cartridges, done me fine, not quite as good as proper plug in ones, but maybe worth considering.

Hi,

The gas powered ones are probably the better bet. I know that the hair straightners are not high power devices so a small 300w inverter would do the job but overall it may well just be easier to use the gas ones.

Need to be sure they don't draw a momentary high current when plugged in from cold as that may trigger the cutout on even a high wattage inverter. I have a 300W inverter and my son's PS2 cuases it to do that, although aftera reset it is fine. Probably to do with capacitance in the PS2 pulling a high current briefly after being switched on, but thats just a guess. In the case of heated wotsits, it would be lower resistance of cold element allowing higher current until they have heated up. Have to suck it and see (not literally!). 10amps current draw + inverter current draw means your battery may flatten quite quickly - be aware.
