4WD Manual Gearbox & Transfer box Oil

Hi all,
just about to fit a replacement box to my bongo, I want to put in brand new oil, I know where the drain plugs are, I know where the filler plugs are. Previous posts state 2.5lts for the gearbox, but what about the transfer box? Is it a shared system? If not, does anyone know the quantity and is it the same oil as the gearbox?

Might be wrong but I thought that the Bongo 4WD has a viscous coupling rather than a true transfer box & that it's a sealed unit?

The transfer case is bolted to the rear of the gear box, and connects to the front and rear propshafts.

Hi , The reason I'm asking is, do I buy 6lts of oil and end up wasting some or do i buy 4 and end up making another 20 mile trip to the motorfactors to buy 1ltr more? I wondered if the T box shared oil with the gearbox, after thinking about it I'm certain it doesn't. I split it from the gearbox in order to lighten the load a little while I transported G-B to my man to diagnose the horrible rattleing. The concrete/oil floor in my garage will testify that it is not a sealed unit, and has its own oil. I think viscous couplings are in those semi permanant 4WD wagons that only fully engage the second axle when some slippage is felt at the wheels. The Bongo (correct me if I'm wrong) is permanant 4WD .
I think what I'll do is, put the gearbox back together bolt on the transfer box and top them both up to the fill hole with water. That way I'll know the quantity. Or I could ring Bellshill in Bath and ask them.
The rattle was a mangled bearing race and cage, some, but not enough bearings and about 10 teeth from both 5th gears bouncing around inside the gearbox (the mag plug was maxed out) my man reackons, going by the pitting on the intact piece of bearing race that there wasn't enough oil in the box.

I was going on the basis of some discussions on the forum some time back (eg

Must admit that was my understanding of the bongo's 4wd system, that it's a viscous coupling, not true permanent 4wd, just that it's not selectable. But having a 2wd, I don't know much about the 4wd aspect personally.

So the viscous coupling is inside the transfer case then & basically takes the place of transfer gears on a "true" 4WD system. At least I got it partially right, I suppose
