Tour of the Hebrides

Post by hatris » Tue Sep 15, 2009 9:46 am

We took our first ferry from Ardrossan to Brodick, Isle of Arran. Did not like the campsite at Lamlash. This was were we were most affected by midges. Harry got bitten despite having lotion, but us girls were not.

It rained all the time we were on Arran and were told it had rained every day of August.

Heading for the early ferry at Loch Ranza it was a lovely surprise to see the deer.

As soon as we left Arran the weather really improved. We had the best part of a day on the Kintyre peninsular.

The campsite at Port Charlotte on Islay was the perimeter of a football pitch but the facilities were excellent and included a restaurant.

We spent the next night in Oban, the campsite was just set out like a car park and the drinking water was bright yellow. We then had a ferry trip to Barra, Calmac were having problems and so this trip took over 8 hours.

We loved Barra and our first wild camp. Our best place of the whole trip was Vatersay Beach.

We had planned to catch up on showers and laundry at Benbecula but the dryers were broke so no clean clothes.

Onto the Isle of Harris and Horgabost Beach. Loved camping here and the showers and toilets are clean.

Moved on to visit Huisinis Beach for wild camp. The weather was lovely and we had a good meal, but during the night a storm blew up and it was very rocky. We found a young Italian girl sheltering in the ladies toilets from the wind and took her back to Tarbert. Heard later that a lot of campers throughout the Hebrides were forced to go home that morning.

We cheated for a night and stayed b&b in Stornaway. We loved Stornaway and got our clothes washed and went out for a meal in a restaurant. We then had a day to visit Lewis before the ferry to Skye. Got a wave from a chap in a bongo leaving Stornaway.

Great pictures. =D> =D> It looks much quieter than when we were there in early July, campsite at Cnip and Harris were pretty busy at that time. Steaks cooked on a Cobb....Mmm ...'livin the dream'

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Dunslair, we did not get to camp at Cnip but took the circular trip round those beaches as we had heard so much about them, the facilities and layout at Cnip looked really good. We were taking a look in case we get back there. Glad you had a good trip too.

Some nice shots there

It rained all the time we were on Arran too, in fact we aborted our plan to stay overnight there and got an earlier ferry to Ardrossan :(

We also cheated and went in a B&B on South Uist - weather was atrocious that night!

Horgabost beach is a surprise indeed, good showers inside old shipping containers

The Western Isles are definitely the place for a holiday 'away from it all' =D>

Most of the caravans parked up at Cnip are there all summer, and very few were occupied when we were there. So the site was actually quieter than on first impressions  Fantastic part of the world, can't wait to get back!

The lady caring for the horgabost site told me there are plans to improve the shower layout, think to avoid that naked thing, and also to provide dryers but not washing machines. All good, as just dry towels are a bonus.

Nice photos, we have lots amazingly similiar! The one your missing is of the Barra flight landing in front of your Bongo. I took it from the Eriskay ferry, that was where we rushed off to that morning. I'll get them uploaded. Nice literally bumping into you round most corners!
