Bongo Fury

Hi all

put new glowplugs in this weekend which sorted the starting issue (rough running when first started). Now when starting from cold the glowplug light goes off, engine starts ok, then the glowplug plug light comes back on again for a second or so. It then goes off and does not come back on again. When starting when the engine is warm, the glowplug light does not come back on again after the engine starts.

I have had a look around on the fourm and see this may be an indication of a failing battery, before I go get another battery, anything else this could be and I can check for?

If it starts ok, both from cold and when warm, then it looks like the glow plugs are working.

Can you hear the relay click in and out when the light comes on the second time?

Just a thought, Eoptio, but could it be that you've just disturbed the wire to the dash light, or whatever controls it?

seen lots of cars do this? never given it a thought as light goes out after a few seconds and doesnt affect running, thought maybe it was to do with it being cold and the glow plugs being powered try and improve combustion at lower temps?

Mine has been doing this for a month or so now.....the bongo doesn't get a lot of use during the week, so i put it down to the battery being on its way out (possibly), as it appears to be the original Jap one. So every now and then i put it on charge for 6-8 hours, and the glowplug light does not reappear after starting from cold, for a couple of weeks anyway!. Not a permanent cure i know, but as previous posts say, it does not affect the starting or running of the bongo at all so maybe after xmas, i will treat her to a new battery

I understood the glow plugs stay on for some time after the engine starts running. This suggests (to my ignorant mind at least) that the light says nothing more to the driver than 'please wait while glowplugs get warmed up' or - even simpler - 'please wait this length of time for glowplugs to warm up'. I wonder if it might be the latter, as I can't say I've noticed a big different in the time before the light extinguishes whether its a heatwave or an arctic winter. As an aside, many Bongo owners wait a further 15 secs or so after light extinguishes before turning the key (have you tried doing this and then seeing if the lick comes back on again). So overall, if the battery is turning the engine enthusiastically, and the Bongo is (now) starting fine, then I'd just carry on regardles and ignore the lights odd behaviour s it sounds like both battery and glowplugs are fit and well. If it is something more sinister, no doubt it will make its presence more clearly felt in due course.

PS - I don't know much about how the glowplug relay works but should it be linked to that then no doubt someone on here can advise.

replaced battery with another one and that seems to have sorted the issue for the moment.
