thought i,d take her for alittle run today , engine started ok , let her warm up for awhile, handbrake off, safety belt on,
into reverse , she moved about 2" ,and will not go further , into drive moved about 2" will not go further , tried reving high ,nothing

every thing seems ok, but just won,t move ????

Hi bobngo,

Jack it up and check the brakes have not stuck on.

Sounds like the brakes are seized on, take off the wheels and tap them with a hammer

My old Nissan Sunny was prone to (drum) brakes seizing on if left for a period with handbrake on. It wouldn't move but then suddenly the brakes let loose with an almighty bang. Scared the crap out of me and I was sure I'd wrecked it. I wonder if it might be that and - if so - how to get them to unbind without risking other damage.

But yours moved 2" so this explanation sounds a bit unlikely.

It might still be worth jacking a rear wheel off the ground. Chock front wheel (for safety), put gearbox in Neutral, and release handbrake lever and see if you can 'feel' what resistance is there.

Hopefully someone who is more techie will be along with thoughts before long.

Good luck - keep us posted 8)

Hi
I'd go with the brakes...I haven't checked the Bongo brakes over, so I can't remember if the cables go through tubes. A couple of inches of movement may be possible on the slack in the transmission, and if no further movement, the brakes or cables are stuck. Test the handbrake by pushing the button in, and lowering the handbrake lever...keeping the button pressed in, you should feel an INCREASING pressure when pulling the hand brake back up, but if the brakes are stuck, you will feel no resistance on the lever, a sudden stop, and no further movement.
I learned this lesson the hard way, so I haven't used a handbrake when parking at home for 25 years...I just drive carefully up to a couple of bricks, and wedge the back wheels...That way, you hardly ever need to adjust the handbrake!
Cheers
Helen

Handbrake shoes probably stuck on/broken up - always best, as Helen says, to use "P" and chocks if on a hill when laid up for any more than a week - especially in wet, salty weather

We had this happen once, the handbrake was stuck on a scrapper. We put it in D and went a inch forward, then in reverse and went an inch back, we kept on doing this until it made a big bang and freed up. There's a risk of loosing a handbrake shoe, but we were OK.

Used to have a Bedford CF1... Released the handbrake after it was stood fer a long time resting in a field.. pulled away & was like the brake was still on.. then pop, the shoes released!
Always started OK though.. :D

as a reminder this glorios bongo has been parked up for 3 months ,due to me/hospital/recovery.
but will now not move ,its wt 2.5 auto.

several members suggested that i should check each wheel for stuck brake, which i did , and all wheels are free ,well they move by the amount of slack in the transmission, (why wo,nt they rotate 360 degrees by hand even in nuetral ?) but the van still wo,nt move , it tries to ,moves about the distance of the slack in the system ,then stops.

tried forward/reverse/forward/reverse , rocking it but that is no help

there are sooooo many "safety lockouts" on this van have i missed one maybe ????

it was all working perfectly before being parked up .

can anyone help please ????

Have you checked the gearbox oil level (engine & box warm & running)?

I still say handbrake shoes - they're stuck to the "drum" part inside the disc and rocking on their pivots.......................

Do you get a "lurching" sensation in the bongo when you move the auto from "P" to "D"? You should still feel a lurch if drive is engaged, even if the handbrake is seized.

If it is 4x4 then the viscous coupling in the 4x4 unit will surely be the reason the rear axle (if fitted, like mine, with a limited slip diff) cannot be turned freely even if the handbrake isn't seized on. If the handbrake were seized on then that wheel would on rock a small amount, if it were only one wheel there should be more movement in the other side.

I can't see what can have happened to the auto box when left standing, but it is something that comes up from time to time here at work with classic cars that may have been left for much longer. The oil level is OK but the thing doesn't work correctly. We may end up rebuilding the unit & normally don't find a reason for the problem, but it's all OK afterwards. Strange.

If you are absolutely sure it isn't the handbrake seized on (which seems likely to me) then dip the oil without the engine running, make a small mark on the dipstick where the level is (it will be very high), then start the engine & dip again. The level should have dropped a lot. If it hasn't then the gearbox isn't pumping the oil for some reason & there is your problem. I don't expect this to be the case though as it seems more likely to be handbrake related.
