Bongo Fury

Hi everyone i have an automatic gear box in my bongo frendee and it keeps jumping out of gear does anyone know the cause or what i have to do to put it right?

Not heard that one here before

I'm no techie (but others are and will no doubt be along with thoughts) but it'd be nice to think it is something to do with the mechanical linkage from the selector lever rather than the )more expensive scenario of) the autobox itself. How does the lever feel? Is it moving cleanly and crisply, does the car stay in gear better if - for rexample - you select 'S1' or 'L' instead of 'D' (which is right next to 'N' in the sequence so might allow a slip most easily if linkage is dodgy).

Etc etc.

Hi thanks for the quick response on further investigation I checked the oil while the bongo was warm and running
Noticed tht there were a lot of air bubbles on the dip stick and can't get a true indication of how much oil is actually in there
Is this normal I think it may be over filled tho not sure .

Sounds very odd. Engine shold be warm and running and gear slector in 'D' I think in order to take a measurement. Air bubbles on dipstick doesn't sound right. Lets wait and see what peeps like Dandywarhol and other gearbox mechanics on here have to say. Meanwhile have a search for old stuff (I seem to recall Dandy mentioning 'clutch packs' once or twice in the past - maybe check that out)

Is it worse hot or cold?? Low oil level will commonly cause jumping in & out of gear & it will be worse when cold. Overfilling will not cause this problem, sometime a gearbox may be overfilled to see if cures this sort of problem, only as a test, if it does then either the dipstick is the wrong one or the pump is sucking air from somewhere it shouldn't. Sometimes it can be difficult to check the level, if you really can't get a reading with the engine ticking over get the cleaned dipstick ready in the top of the distick tube with the engine running, shut the engine off & IMMEDIATELY dip is as soon as the engine stops. That way you avoid the splashing but will get the level before it drains back into the sump. I always check mine in Park.

It never stopped me

I mentioned that because the post said that the OIL had been checked not the Transmission Fluid. Some people could have been confused between the Engine oil and the Transmission Fluid.

Hi All, yes checked the transmission fluid i suspect there may be a leak somewhere does anyone know the correct amount of both oil and transmission fluid it should take ? thanks again for all your comments they are very much appreciated

Engine oil is 6.5 litres inc filter, 6 litres if you don't change filter
ATF oil depends on how much you get out, I've got anything from about 5 to just over 7 litres when I've done a full oil change, drop pan etc - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=30096 - it's hard to quantify as so much is held within the workings. Worth dropping it & cleaning the filter out though, at least you eliminate that possibility.
