hi all, noticed a while ago small amount of rust appearng on front wing so decided to tackle it yesterday

wing off, cause you just know the source of the problem is going to be on the backside of the wing.

wing from visible side.

from inside.cleaned up wing and treated with rust ihhibitor.

currently at this stage

what im going to do,in hindsight,is flat off the rest of the lower half of the wing and respray
all of the silver bit so hopefully it will all blend in.while the wings off im also going to blast some more waxoyl behind the wing and the panel on the van.off to do some more sanding and painting catch you later, tay.

Hi there,
Nice work. If you can, get as much rust off as possible with a dremil or something similar, the repair will then last longer. Try and use a zinc based primer as well, there's another thread on here somewhere discussing this with someone in the know on paints and rust.

Good work and photos.
I have probs there and wheel arches but am waiting till I fix other probs first. As I may have to nuke the van.

Excellent post Tay - v. useful info for others as that is one of the principle places where the old metal muncher makes its first appearance. The paint and bodywork specialist who gave excellent info on stripping, prepping & priming was I think falcoron, and he talked about prepping for and applying zinc primers as teh best way of slowing down any reapearance.
Good luck. I should be doing a bit to mine in the rear wheel arch areas (v. minor at present) if I can get a round tuit.

Good stuff but you'll need to tackle the rust in the groove otherwise all your hard work will be ruined in a month or two

I take it then that the wings are a straight forward bolt off job, any photos available, may well be useful to all in the future./

hi guys, quick update.flatted off rest of wing and primered.

sprayed on top coat and laquer.

finally bolted back on van.

its by no means a professional job, couple of small marks here and there, but hopefully achieved
what i wanted to by eliminating the rust.i put loads of rust inhibitor were the two panels meet and really went to town waxoyling the seam.wings are straightforward to take off, appox seven 10mm bolts, three 8mm bolts and four plastic scrivets.one bolt at the front is a little bit fiddly but apart from that its an easy job.while paint was drying inbetween coats i took off other wing and had a look,no rust at all,so waxoyled panels and put back on.rear arches next week! tay.

Good job well done there Tay - a lot more professional than letting the rust get a grip
