Bongo Fury

hi guys, i have a 96 2.5diesel, and wondering if it has a catalytic convertor? i would have a look myself but its raining real bad here and dont fancy laying on the floor, the reason im asking is that im getting fumes in the car when stationary, so i have a leek somewhere, and im thinking of putting a stainless exhaust on its £289 from the down pipe back, and they asked if it has a cat fitted? they also said i could do away with it if i wanted to , providing it has one. if i got rid of the cat would that affect the mot, running, economy etc, i also have that cold start button for the exhaust, im presumbing that its ok to just disconnect it?

Bongos dont have catalytic converters!! Some people mistake the flexi joint pipe as a catalytic converter it isnt.In regard to cold start yes its better disconnected as it can cause problems and has been known to lock shut causing rough running problems and lack of accelleration.

If you can smell fumes have a check on the clips holding the engine covers down under the fronts seats you may have a little gap also check on the tailgate rubber and the seal around the rear you may have a gap letting exhaust fumes in,also be aware that the Bongo ventillation system is very good at letting external smells into the cab you may be picking others exhaust smells up.

I'd check where the leak is coming from before changing the exhaust, just in case you don't need to do it.

i also have that cold start button for the exhaust, im presumbing that its ok to just disconnect it? thanks

The worst problem that the valve in the exhaust can give is when it jams shut... You''ll know if this happens because fuel consumption will rocket.

thanks guys, just got back from my mates garage and a weld has gone on the exhaust, so new exhaust it is then, and it doesnt have a cat.

Yes but just 2-way, not 3-way like a petrol, because contrary to what the media and everybody else tries to tell us all the time, a diesel's exhaust does not need anywhere as much cleaning up as a petrol's does.
And even then cleaning it up doesn't involve a 10% mpg penalty either unlike a petrol.
