'Swarf and Tears' HELP 4x4 propshaft tearing itself in two!

My 4x4 now looking at 2 wheel drive as only future prospect!!! Advice greatly appreciated.

UJ on front prop-shaft has gone (judder under load and visibly falling apart!). Its the one closest to the transfer box (splined end) or if you prefer the at the back of the shaft. I ordered a UJ from well known Bongo parts supplier but the UJ they sent is to large?? The new part would fit the UJ in the centre of the prop-shaft but the one thats gone at the end is smaller? Also the knackered UJ does not have a c-clip to hold in each of its four cups but some weird circular thing with little segments in it. Is it possible to source and replace these smaller UJ's?? Any advice greatly appreciated.

I know I could run it as a rear wheel drive but would prefer an original spec vehicle and the mighty 4x4 drift cornering available as a result.

Thanks Jay

Don't know what year your bongo is, but if you look here - http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsmk2/ you can get the part numbers (click on the + of the index at the side of the drawing) for the right bits, or see if any of the guys in the breaking bongos section can help?

Thanks missfixit70. I looked on lushprojects and the UJ which has gone on my beloved steed is illustrated - http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html- but not shown with a part number? I dread that this means its integrated and never ment to be messed with; in which case i'll be looking for a new complete front prop!

You don't say where you live but there is an excellent company in Morecambe, Lancashire who will refurb your propshaft for you at very reasonable cost. You need to deliver/collect the propshaft yourself however.

I had quite a bit of ongoing propshaft trouble with ujs disintergrating. Background cause was a shot viscouse coupling in the transfer box but the deciding factor was always the tyre sizes. New tyres on front or back always equalled a propshaft problem. Changing all four tyres at the same time tended to delay any problem.

In the end I accepted defeat. Disconnected the front propshaft and had a heavy duty rear propshaft made by the company named above. End of problems.

There is also a recall notice for propshafts in the members area. It might be worth checking it out.

Good luck

Thanks All! Bells Garage have stepped in with a second hand one for a reasonable cost. Might get the spare refurbed as suggested if this is a common issue with these van's. Bottom line is it will live again; and 'God Willing' be back on the road by Tuesday next week.

Only great news when you find out why the u/j has failed - viscous coupling probs spring to mind :?
