Bongo Fury

Having recently bought a Pela pump I changed my engine oil earlier this week. After draining the oil I looked for the oil filter that I was sure I had in my cellar and......not there!. So my question is can I change the filter without draining the oil - in other words is the filter connection below the oil level?

Also any suggestions on the best way/solvent to clean out the Pela?

the dipstick measures the oil level in the engine,satisfy yourself that this measurment is below the filter height and that will give you a guide,you should from memory be ok me thinks.

Yes you can. It makes no difference where the oil level is in the sump as the filter is pressure feed so it only has oil pumped there when the engine is running. Just don't try to change it with the engine running!

Agreed, it should live in the 'orrible bit of the shed as well

Mike - that is my usual attitude to these things too but I suspect that the oil I removed was thicker and blacker than usual so I would like to have it clean for the next use. I'm thinkng suck some white spirit through the tube to clean that and then maybe soda crystals and water shaken up in the main bottle.

Must admit I think the suction pipe could do with a clean - in case it blocks - suspect that I'll find out next time I use it

I just leave the tube dangling over a cloth, jar, whatever for some time to drain oil out of it. If the plunger has got oil on it (as happened once when I overtopped the full mark on the tank and then did some pumping) I clean that up with an old rag. I'd be VERY disinclined to use white spirit, soda crystals etc. on it in case it has a corrosive effect on the plastic and any seals (soda is nasty stuff, and trying to clean old oil out with water and soda is likely only to promote emulsified sludge formation which won't come out easily). The old Pela doesn't need to be a display piece, you just want to know it isn't going to quietly drip oil everywhere once its back in its box. But overzealous cleaning may actually damage it. Thats what I reckon anyway.

Full agreement with you there Mike just leave the tube dangling to drain any excess out, then put it away after a quick wipe

where is the oil sump plug on a bongo. i am about to attempt to change the oil and i can't find it. do i need to take the plastic undertray off?

Nope, there should be a hole in it & the plug should be visible, under the engine basically, I'd say in the middle between the front doors.
