Coolant problems

On the expansion tank there are two outlets. One from the cap has a tube on it, the other one to the side facing inwards at the top of the tank, has no pipe at all. When the van has stopped after a run, you can smell hot water, even though it would appear to be not losing coolant now.
I was wondering whether there should be a pipe to connect somewhere so as any coolant syphons back into the system? :(

Hi,
No there is not a syphon system on the Bongo...It is a closed circuit and the tank is part of this circuit.
There should be 2 pipes comomg from the left bottom of the tank (as you look at it) 1 goes to the top of the radiator abd the other goes towards the rear...The pipe with the "open" end at the neck is the pressure relife.
If you are smelling coolant you may have a slight weep somwhere....check round the top of the radiator and all pipe joints.
You should not smell hot coolant if all is well.
consider fitting a Low Coolant Alarm as small leaks can be hard to detect...Or....check your levels during every journey and at the start of the day
