Engine running on a bit when I switch ignition off

I've done a search for this, but haven't turned anything up - probably because I'm searching for the wrong words.

I have noticed of late that when I switch the ignition off, the engine runs on for a little bit. I've got a diesel engine.

I am fairly sure I understand the reason but can I just ask your collective opinion on one question -How long can I sensibly leave this before I get something done about it? I don't intend to be negligent with my beloved Bongo's health, but we are somewhat financially disadvantaged at present and sod's law says that lots of things are breaking or needing replacing, so I need to work out where this lies in the list of priorities.

Many thanks in advance for your advce.

Sounds like the stop solenoid on top of the fuel pump playing up, get it sorted asap in case it gets to the point where it won't turn off at all. That should give you enough search hints

Thank you, Kirsty. And here was me thinking it might be a bit of carbon build up

Have done a search and am now fretting about how fast I can get it dealt with :(

Thanks. Just phoned our local Mazda dealer (the wonderful ones with the import parts database) and the valve is £197.67 and the O Ring is £6.51. Bit of a difference

It may be worth popping the electrical connector off the solenoid and give it a clean up? No harm in trying it if it saves a few bob on a new solenoid. Try using electrical contact cleaner spray on the removed connector contacts, and wait for the solution to evaporate before plugging back in. Failing that, WD40 should clean it up,but wipe it off before re-connecting as i find it attracts dirt.

I doubt it's the connection as the voltage holds it open, so if the connection was iffy I'd have thought it would be cutting out on you?

Hi,
Its generally the rubber seat on the valve starting to disintegrate that causes over run.

Take the solenoid out and check it before you buy a new one.
