currently looking for bongo, test drove one yesterday- smoked on start up and was quite a rattley engine. had just had diesel pump replaced (is this common for vehicle with only 70,000miles?)!
can anybody shed any light on what might be wrong with an auto box ;when changing from first to second, quite violent jerk into second, doesn't do this from 2nd to 3rd,seemed to work ok on kickdown but definitely not smooth from first to second a s autos should be
otherwise couldn't find fault with it, mot\tax for a year, seemed exceptional value at 3,400 pounds-is this one of those to be avoided????????

No expert, but I wouldn't go for it. Spend a bit (only a little bit!) more and get something that works fine on a test drive - there's plenty out there.

1st to second can be a little jerky from cold, check the level, colour & smell of the gearbox oil, make sure it's warmed up & check level with engine running having ranged through the gears, wonder if the rough running is the timing out where the fuel pump's been replaced? or is it being sold on to get rid of an ongoing issue?
Could be a bargain - could be a lemon.

Ditto again - walk away.
Sorry, but I don't see how "otherwise couldn't find fault with it" applies after a start like that.

oh it was just we had a list of things to look out for and everything else was cool. suppose we just wanted to get out there, but have taken advice and are looking out for a good one.its scary though, when all we're hearing is warnings and the bongo dealer near us is not someone to trust
thanks to all who offered thoughts

put your location in your profile and someone near to you might go with you to look over a bongo

As Missfixit says 1-2 shift shock is not at all uncommon & not something to worry about on its own. A rattly engine however . . .
