Glow plugs not working - no feed to purple wire on relay

Hi all,

I have traced my glow plug problem, there is no issue with the relay, a direct feed brings the glow plugs on.

The light on the dash comes on and goes off - but that does not directly corolate to the live to the relay as noted in the factsheet.

The purple wire (feed to relay coil) is not becoming live, I have traced the wire back to the ECU and it is intact, the signal from the ECU seems to be very brief.

Anyone any ideas why this is?

Is there a sensor telling the ECU the engine is warm and stopping it switching the glow plugs on?

My Bongo is a 1996 diesel manual 4x4.

Many thanks,

Steve.

Wonder if your temp sender (above the starter motor on the drivers side of the engine) is iffy, or there's a iffy connection?

good call that kirsty, when the engine is warm the glow plugs do operate but for a shorter time,
what is the dash light doing,in this brief period,is it going off quickly to??
may be worth checking the fan switch and connections imo.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses.

The temperature sensor is connected (if it is disconnected the fans run).

The glow plug light comes on as normal.

Oddly, the black wire on the relay does not connect to earth, and I can't trace why, unfortunately earthing the wire makes no difference.

Are there any multiplugs the cables go through which could be faulty?

Where does the ECU take it's feed from for the glow plugs?

Thanks,

Steve

Yes, I've checked the wiring at the ECU, it is getting it's 12v from the ignition, and the pruple wire is intact through to the relay. The black should be connected to earth at point 16 which is in the engine bay, and all looks good there, but there is a break in that wire somewhere.
