Changing a Turbo on a WL01 engine

Hi there,
I'm just wondering if there is a PDF walk through for changing a turbo on a WL01 engine?
I've done a few little bits and bobs before and I'm feeling slightly brave. Our turbo is screaming like a fighting chimp and I'm thinking of just getting one off a seconghand engine.
Anyone got any advice or possible pitfalls of doing it this way?
Many thanks
Dave.

Are you sure it's the turbo and not the notorious No1 exhaust manifold stud that is doing the screaming?

oh! I don't know. When we first took the van in, I thought it was simply a belt needing tightening as when you put power through it seemed to go away but it's got worse and our mechanic was saying it was coming from the somewhere in the Turbo unit...So I was thinking simply change the unit over and
But I know nothing about the no1 exhaust manifold stud! Sounds hopeful and is there an easy fix? surely things are never easy!
Just a quick description of the problem. Screaming sound coming frmo that part of the enging. With Front seat up the sound on warmup idle is almost unbearable! When I'm driving, it's fine when I'm just driving along with little or no power through the trottle but as soon as I put my foot down there is a loud sceaming sound coming for that part of the engine. If I put my foot to the floor, then it evens out and becomes one pitch. When you put less power through there are several pitches involved. Generally on long journeys now it's becoming a right pain the b**kside.
Thanks
Dave

Sounds like it could well be the stud :D There's loads of info on here about it, but here is one of the threads http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ifold+stud
It's a lot cheaper to have done than a new turbo 8) Here's a thread from someone who's just replaced their own http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=41210

Brilliant! Thanks very much for the reply. I hope it is the stud! A quick skim of the manifold should sort that out and save me a few pennies!
Cheers
Dave.

Now then!

Having looked at the pictures in that link and then looked at my engine, I can already see the No1 bolt is not there!! Well, the head of it isn't anyway ... So I'm hoping and assuming that is my problem and getting the manifold skimmed and all bolts replaced will cure the problem? [-o<
Do turbos go as a rule? Am I right in thinking they are low pressure turbos?

Cheers

Dave.

Quite often only need the old stud removed and new one put in - has been said to be an easy job for most garages :D
Turbo failure is blissfully rare :D
Low pressure? - Pass

That's what happened with mine in the end, no further work required thank goodness! Hopefully will be the same with yours. [-o< Fingers crossed for you.

On further inspection today, seems totally spot on.

I removed the pipes around the heatshield and then the heatshield itself and took a look at all the manifold stud/bolts etc and No1 stud/nut has nothing on it and when I ran the engine and sprayed WD40 over the area you can see it blowing and there are fumes visible coming up from the area. You can also hear the noise coming from that area and the actual turbo sounds very quiet.

Fingers crossed...Just need to get it done now. I'm wondering if removal, skim and new gasket is in order.

Cheers,

D.

Got van back yesterday and good news. Was the Gasket and Stud that was causing the noise.
Thanks to everyone for their advice. Removed a lot of stress!
