Hello again, having read the horror stories regarding overheating, is it recommended to maintain the coolant system?

I am thinking about replacing all hoses as a precaution, I guess they are the originals.

Any other maintenance tips to try to prevent the overheating/cracked cylinder head scenario would be gratefully received!

It runs fine at the minute, it is a 98 2.5td, the needle is firmly planted at the 11o'clock position and has been all the time I have owned it (2 yrs)

If you've read the horror stories about the cooling system, you must have read about replacing the thermostat with a mazda original, thorough flushing to make sure there is no mixing of incompatible coolant & replacing coolant (recommended every 2 years) of the correct strength, checking the hoses etc, so the answer is yes it is very important to maintain the coolant system.
Most importantly the temp gauge is dumbed down, so it's not going to tell you anything useful, it will always sit at 11 o clock until it's already getting too hot, so the first thing to do if you haven't already is to modify it by fitting a Mason temp alarm which resensitises it, or modifying it yourself with the instructions linked to in the factsheet on coolant/temp aalrms in the members area, or by fitting seperate temperature monitoring of some sort. Also a good idea is to fit a low coolant alarm, preferably with the high level add on, but it seems Haydn is discontinuing the high level add on.
