Power steering problems

I am new to this forum so please accept my apologies in advance if the question has already been answered.
My Power steering is playing me up in so far as it appeared to have stopped working i.e. about a week a go the steering became harder to turn particularly on downward slopes or flat surfaces. Going upwards this seemed to be ok but again it became more and more stiff to the point on all levels it felt that the steering became unpowered.
There appears to be no leaks of fluid in either the steering resevuoir or the gearbox. I did top it up to the maximum position to see if this helped. Little difference appeared but in the last day it seems to have rectified itself, this is after 4 days.
I am worried that it will revert back to the problem and I would like to avoid this. Does anybody know what caused this and if so how do I prevent this from reaccuring.
Ian

WD40 on the steering column joints, especially the one at the pedals.
Really good soaking.
I came home a day early because I thought the steering was failing.
Now it is like a new pump has been fitted and it is still working perfectly.
Paper catches the excess and leaves the carpet clean.

Welcome to the madhouse :D have a read of this thread http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=29471 - knowing where you are can often produce local help 8)
When you topped the fluid up, did you turn the steering from full lock to full lock a couple of times? - this is what mine needed to get the fluid through. A few days driving has probably done this for you :)
