Nut on the loose

Having done just short of 2000 miles in the past 2 weeks yesterday saw us taking the local bypass home when there was a loud thump under the passenger side front well with the comment from my Satnextto, what did you run over.
Did not have time to answer before hell broke out, battery light and other lights appeared on display, temp. guage shot up to max, Haydn alarm started screaming and panic set in.
Fortunately we were within a couple of hundred yards from a layby, teatime traffic behind us and no hard shoulder so I had to go for the layby. Needless to say the coolant had dropped and I reckoned a hose had popped, so phoned for assistance. Meanwhile lifted passenger seat to let cool air in and to see if overflow plug had escaped, obviously not. Could not see any hose damage at all so my bet was a heater hose, just how wrong can you be. AA man arrives never dealt with a Bongo but got stuck in putting my amateur diagnostic to one side and 5 minutes later produced the alternator pulley from under the passenger well area. The nut holding said pulley had come off with the result the pulley belts has also disappeared.
I am no longer paranoid about coolant, hoses etc will now focus my paranoia on the alternator.
