Post by Portlysurfer » Fri Jul 16, 2010 10:09 pm

I am a the proud new owner of a 2000 bongo, aero city runner! She is gorgeous and soon going in for conversion!! I have the got the glow plug light flashing...... :( Thanks to much info from this very site, i have got the code 1228 from the computer.
Where do i proceed to now? She is drinking diesel at present and i need help!
She's still under warranty from the seller, so i am really after answers atm.

Can anyone help?
she has the following symptom....

Runs for a while (dependant on previous temp)
then starts flashing, and looses the turbo.

So far I have checked the heat sensor under the centre console-ok

Is this an OBD2 vehicle? if so this seems like a likely answer:

Thank you.

Is that code a result of another failure, or would that show up too?

that's a good plan, but the dealer is two hours away, and it will require a tank of diesel at the present rate. I'd like to know what the issue is before returning it. then at least i haven't got to wait around whilst they decide whats going on! :?

Location input to profile.
Along with the two hour drive it envolves a day off from work!
I am happy to install minor parts myself to save the hassle
so if I can work out the faliure, and the dealer is happy to send the parts
then jobs a good un!
Also she's off to see Ed at CMH tomorrow for her conversion into
a true dream machine! So I has hoping to gether sorted before that, but alas

Hi there.

I had a longstanding problems with our 2002 Diesel Bongo with the dreaded going into limp mode and glow plug light flashing once engine was warm and sat in traffic. I cleared all the old fault codes and found the two fault codes being displayed were P0400 and P1228. Spent hours researching this trawling for answers through the forums, FB groups and it's also well detailed on the Wastegate Actuator factsheet in the members section. It's obvious people have spent hours on this, but nothing seems to give a permanent guaranteed long term fix. After much head scratching I discovered Mark at The Bongo Master in Leicestershire, really good, decent, honest bloke, who knows Bongos inside and out, he has great reviews from all his customers. Mark immediately knew what the problem was. It's a known issue with later Bongos, due to combination of a change of turbo design and poorer quality grade diesel in the UK. Mark charges £600 to retrofit an older turbo from an earlier model and changes the relevant ducting and piping to go with it. The van then ran as sweet as a nut, with no loss in performance at all. Just thought I'd share, as it could save somebody alot of time, money and hassle in the future.
