Fuel problems?

Hi

I did a search and a few ideas have come up but was wondering if anyone could help me out directly. My Bongo (2.5TD / Automatic) recently became unwell. Starting it was fine but I got a few yards down the road and there was a loss of power and it cut out. After a few attempts I was able to restart it and get it back home. I was hoping this was just the New Moon so I attempted the same thing a few days later and it did exactly the same thing at the same point down the road.

Today, with some help from a mate, I changed the fuel filter (I also put 15l of Diesel in as the gauge isn't working either!) and although we got it started - after a minute or 2 of idling it lost power and cut out again. We couldn't then get it started.

He somehow convinced me it wasn't the fuel pump (because it started off ok?) however we took some fuel lines off and no diesel was coming through when we turned the ignition. My mate seems to think there is some sort of pump / filter in the tank and this has stopped / got blocked up (he gave it a few knocks with a hammer and couldn't hear anything). Is this possible? Has the mysterious banjo that I've heard about anything to do it with it?

Grateful for any help as I want to push it to the garage on Monday and I want to sound like a know what I'm talking about!

Cheers

fuel will not come through if you just turn the ignition on as there is no electric pump - fuel is simply sucked through by the injector pump.

As you have changed the main filter it sounds like you now need to clean the "banjo" filter in the inlet to the injector pump do a search on "Clean banjo filter" and you should turn up all the info you need.

That filter is easily blocked and produces the symptoms you describe.

Thanks mate. Did a search for cleaning the banjo filter and although there are lot's of mentions, there's nothing to say where it actually is. Anyone got any ideas?

Just joined, do you know if that is the same fact sheet as the fuel strainer?

Yep, I think that's it's proper name.

It's not unknown for the pickup in the fuel tank to become blocked it crud has got into the tank & you let it run low enough for anything floating to get under the pick up strainer in the tank - http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html blowing back through thr fuel line should disldge anything.
Have you tried running it with the fuel cap off? it could be the vent is blocked thus building a vacuum in the tank, but I wouldn't think that'd be enough to stop it after a couple of minutes.
Check all the rubber fuel hoses are intact & not perishing, especially those on top of the fuel tank - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=33920 - this link'll help you sort the fuel gauge too
Also check there are no fuel leaks around the fuel pump.
Is it getting enough air, intake could be blocked or air filter choked?

Cheers Missfixit.

It certainly wasn't the banjo filter. A cleaner, more unblocked filter you have never seen! Well worth the £13 membership fee to find and see that little fella! :D

I have always run my tank pretty low #-o and there is a bit of liquidy stuff all over the engine near the pump, not sure if it's oil or diesel though.

Clean it all off & see if you can see where it's coming from. You should be able to tell the difference in smell between diesel & oil, just sniff the tank and dipstick to compare if you're not sure

Have you checked the fuel cutoff solenoid.
Sometimes it will start and then the unit overheats and stops working again
The engine will then stop.
Maybe now it has stopped completely.
Remove it and see if it will start or if diesel is coming through.

Good point, was the battery struggling? Check the voltage & charge it up if necessary, if the voltage gets too low the fuel solenoid shuts off, 24-3002 on here - http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html
