I seem to remember speedo chips causing this :? Is yours chipped? i.e. speed and distance in miles.

I wonder if there's a fault code stored?

Other members have experienced similar problems, and this was due to a sensor problem, (see DBO's LINK ABOVE), or a faulty speed sensor, SEE THIS LINK or a faulty rev counter, SEE THIS LINK.
Sometimes there's a bad connection (especially if something's recently been disturbed in the area of the sensor), or it's a fault with the sensor itself. Others will be along with more ideas. :)

what age is the van? early models the pick up is easy to get at, just forward and below the fuel pump, later models are bit more tricky and are behind the lower main pulley. you have the opposite symptoms to most i've seen tho, usually thay read when cold and drop off when hot?

it's on a N plate the other sympton i forgot to mention is sometimes it does register when the engine is cold but only for a short while then drops off with no effect on performance or gear changes and it has never dropped off once it is working properly as i have done aprox 5500km in it since April without any problems at all and it flew the mot in June and on a trip to Cornwall on the way down returned 32mpg this was worked out on a brim to brim fill up the doing the maths
