Wienerschnitzel – one of my favourite foods – but not many places do veal to do it properly. See later for my failed SchnitzelKing attempt

You can do this with pork or even chicken but it’s not the same. In Germany they call the pork version Schnitzel Wiener Art, Viennese style schnitzel to differentiate it from the original.

Image
Veal, eggs, lemon, bread, watercress, potato salad, Parmesan and a few other things.

Image
Crack a couple of eggs into some milk....

Image
....then mix together with a whisk. This is a Bongo, so that’ll be a fork then

Image
Breadcrumbs (from bread, not those Paxo golden crumbs for cheats  ), Parmesan, oregano, thyme and salt & pepper....

Image
....mix together until you have something looking like, erm, herby breadcrumbs

Image
Now to flatten the veal. Don’t carry a rolling-pin or meat tenderiser in your Bongo? – No problem....

Image
....you have all you need, place the veal in a plastic bag....

Image
....and simply reverse over it a couple of times....

Image
Simples

Image
Now get your flour, egg and breadcrumb mixtures at the ready....

Image
....coat in the flour....

Image
....then the egg....

Image
....then the breadcrumbs....

Image
....and you should have something like this. Get the frying pan ready

Image
Fry for a few minutes....

Image
....on each side....

Image
....and serve with watercress, potato salad and lemon wedges. And proper German curry ketchup

So why the fascination for schnitzels? – We had a tip-off of a great schnitzelhaus near Frankfurt. Of course, there are schnitzelhausen all over Germany and when we went to the Nürburgring in 2007 we sampled the menu here....

Image

....but there were much greater things to be sampled at der Waldgeist so we headed there for the SchnitzelKing menu

Can you imagine what 2.25kg of schnitzels looks like? – well I thought I had a healthy appetite and that it was a good idea. Until the waiter brought the meal I had ordered....

Image

Image
How is one person supposed to eat all this? :?

Image
This was me stuffed – a total failure  Looks like Muzette was the only one who ordered a sensible meal

Image
Fortunately they provide copious amounts of foil to take away your meal for supper :D

Anyway, check out the real SchnitzelKing, Canadian Peter Czerwinski who beat the 2.5kg recordholder with 4.0kg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kuEKzSC0Hg

Having tried 2.25kg and failed miserably, I can wholeheartedly applaud the new 4.0kg SchnitzelKing =D>
