Bongo Fury

Hi Again All ,

I bought my bongo 3 weeks ago privately and it was serviced 3 months ago (according to sticker on windscreen) couple i bought it from has all service documents at their accountants and i will receive them when they come back.
Now i can do my own servicing but i need to know what is vital on these vans so i can pay particular attention to these. Discs and pads was done at last service they squeal a bit , so a good clean i think and i shall take the discs into work and skim them if necessary , they look pretty new .
I shall do the standard , Air,Oil,Fuel, filters and of course oil change . Is there anything else i should pay attention to.
Oh by the way i have a 1999 (V reg) V6 2.5 petrol model.

If you do your own servicing at least you know exactly what has been done, what grade of lubricants etc. and what quality of components have been used.

I treat stickers on windscreens and stamps in service booklets with the same circumspection that I regard casual references to pre-delivery inspections and cambelt changes with.

But to answer your question, I would say check all hoses, heaters and radiators for leaks. Check the injector pump for drips. Check the droplinks and anti-roll bushes for wear. Keep an eye on those wheel arches too!

depending on miles or kms ie 100,000 km timing belt is a must but its not cheap
the kit will set you back £600 alone and your looking at 4 hours plus to fit it
someone on here had a belt snap and a hefty bill was to follow

as for the rest i would check all fluids
change gearbox fluid
change coolant ( but really thats a good mazda garage job )
if you are changing the plugs a lot of us V6 ers are using boshe super 4 plugs

a must is also a waxoil especially around the inside of the arches

Spot on advice there YBB.......for items to be considered other than Oil/Filter changes......

If the cam belt has not been done then that would be a good idea.....based on age/mileage.....However there is a well informed point of view ( he has done loads of cambelts) thet unless the bearings/tenshioners are showing signes of wear then just changing the belt should do the trick.....10 yesrs is going to age a belt but will not age a bearing......only mileage will do that. With a diesel doing the whole job is not very expensive so may as well do the lot....the V6 is much more complex.

I guess Chakota needs to see the Service documents before he decides on what service parts need changing, especially in reference to the Timing belt.....
Personally and this is personally, if there is no information to suggest a change of Timing belt since in the UK, then I personally would either change it or get it changed and I would go for the full kit inc idlers.....as I have changed some V6 belts and kits before on non Mazda engines, while the covers are off.....do the full job....BUT...... yer pays yer money......

My V6 has done 98,000 miles and cambelt done at hillside garage at 79,000 miles. It runs really lovely and smooth no tappet noise etc.
I bought it in Barnstaple which is 212 miles from my home and my son in law drove it home with me following , taking note of any signs of smoke and smells from exhaust . It drove all the way faultlessly so engine i think is ok. But she is my baby now and a bit of tlc shall be bestowed on her. I will use her once a week for work and work on her over the autumn/winter period doing all the things suggested on here.

Worth thinking about your fuel filter aswell they are cheap if ya shop around, i stayed with ngk plugs cheaper, change them more often stick with the gen mazda oil filter aswell it is worth the extra few quid on the v6 , there are some shabby oil filters on the market, plus you will get a new sump washer with it all the usual atf fluids made a huge difference to my gear change, steering. May be worth looking at leads and dizzy cap aswell made a big diff on mine a while ago but i was having issues at the time But you may get away with just filters and oil, I may be wrong but i'm sure 100,000 is major service interval

Have you any idea what a 100,000 mile service entails as i do not have a manual

Do you know the what the ref. number of these plugs and are they pre-gapped ?
