'Still desperate' is the man to contact - Iain seems to know about a box of tricks to enable the originals to be used

Ours had a load of aerials like that fitted when it arrived in the UK too.
The radio reception was also poor & suffered from interference when certain things were switched on.
I traced my fault to the screws that secure the single antenna. They had slight corrosion on them & were giving a bad earth for the aerial. This one is for the radio only.
I disconnected the aerial cable from the radio, then tested for continuity to earth with a multi-meter.I got a high ohm reading which indicated a poor circuit.
I then removed the 2 screws on the roof aerial one at a time & cleaned them and also the metal that they seat on inside the black plastic. Once they were cleaned, slightly oiled & replaced I checked the circuit again and got an open circuit reading, of 0 ohms.
Quick spin up the road was enough to prove the radio was fixed.
I then removed all other aerials as they were just clamped to the roof gutter, because I didn't want them to be a source of rusting & all the cables to free up some space behind the dash. I think they were for a TV system..... maybe..... but wasn't fitted when I received my Bongo!
You could also have a broken aerial cable which will need replacing to fix the fault & I am sure I have read topics on here on how to do that but unsure on how to do links......

From the pics, the original looks ok. Wonder if he's trying to get uk reception with a Jap stereo?

I think it's still limited reception even with a band expander isn't it?

If i remember right...? One of the factory areal coaxial connections are on the drivers side behind the end dash panel, with the quarter light vent on it.. (can be un-clipped.) Attached to the metal dash frame with a clip & tie.. Just under behind where the mirror switch is....

I have a pair of those aerials too. They look sexy but are probably useless, I don't actually know as I can't find the ends of the cables to try them out!
I had a useless Japanese radio too. I just cut to the chase and replaced it with a nice new Kenwood. Checkout the prices of band expanders first as it might be easier/cheaper just to buy a UK spec radio.
On the subject of "in Bongo entertainment", (make up your own jokes here), I also splashed out and bought a TV/DVD/Games unit. The game controller is a bit rubbish (think Pifco) but as a TV/DVD it works well. Freeview built in and you can even record to an SD card.

Of course the aeriel supplied was useless so another £38 (ouch!) bought me an Avtex STH1000. Apparently all the lorry drivers buy these and nobody was more surprised than me when it worked. Brilliantly actually, I get a better signal than with the Jodrell Bank thing on the roof of the house. Went to Weymouth for the weekend, plugged it all in and hey presto, Eastenders loud and clear. Bugger!
Don't buy a TV aerial without checking this one out first.
