Burning smell? Burnt rubber? Rear axle?

Help!
During a journey 50 miles or so yesterday, I noticed a distinct burnt rubber type smell from the rear of my Bongo. It wasnt noticeable as a driver, but my rear passengers mentioned it.
When I parked up there was a smell and very very light smoke (like a gentle exhaust) from the rear underneath of the Bongo. There was nothing leaking out, and I wonder if any Bongsters have an idea what this may be? I was thinking is there rear transmission oil or gearbox oil towards the rear? I have a new exhaust, new rear brakes, new tyres all of which are well run-in so it cannot be any of these?
Please clue me up! Bongo Kerry!

Just a thought.. Nothing like polythene sheet wrapping caught round the prop-shaft?? http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html

Had this happen on the M4 with a lorry once smelled similar, kind of melted, had to cut it free at the depot with a Stanly knife.....

Hi. We had same experience earlier this week. Drove 40 odd miles to next campsite and smelt same sort of smell. Checked all brakes and tyres. Nothing untoward there. Had same thought about bag being caught underneath. No smell since that day.

is it petrol or diesel?. check for oil dropping onto exhaust and burning off.check all your oil levels in the gbox,is it 4x4,and diff/s.could be handbrake shoe.or pads sticking on discs.could be worth checking the vents are clear on the g/box and diff/s

Had similar problem myself, plastic carrier bag had melted onto the silencer of the exhaust #-o 'stank', had to wait til it was cold and scrape it off

Thanks for the replies.
Having checked under the Bongo, there is nothing wrapped around the prop shaft or exhaust (eg. melting plastic bags). However the smell only seems apparent after about an hour when the van is hot, and appears to be light smoke (suggesting burnt oil) coming from somewhere to the rear. Nothing visible underneath, and no leaks on driveway!!
Help!
Thanks Bongo Kerry. [-o<

do a search for oil leak,it runs down the engine to the rear edge of the sump then on to the exhaust and burns off!

Its most likely, but not always, an oil leak from the Cam shaft seals, the oil runs down, then back along the length of the engine (it slopes down from front to back) and it drips off just above the exhaust pipe where it then generates the smell. Normally when travelling you won't smell it, but as soon as you slow / halt then the smell gets sucked into the ventilation system. Its been mentioned several times, along with pictures of source leak and drips on to exhaust see here http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 9&p=397413
