Heater blower motor brush replacement

Hi all

About to bite the bullet and get replacement brushes as my fan has failed yet again. I have already stripped down and lubricated the motor, made a hole in the end cap, re-soldered the relay joints etc but the brushes were looking pretty worn, so I'm fairly sure it's time to sort them. I contacted Solent Tools following advice from Croylo on another thread (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=38734&p=392841#p392841) and it looks likely they have the means to sort this. They said to take pics and email to them with some measurements so they can let me know.

In the meantime, can anyone advise if it's OK to drive without the air intake and heater body? If I remove them to get the motor brushes out, should I drive the Bongo, or not until I've replaced everything?

Cheers,

Spacialised

no problems really, the only thing i would worry about is the hole that is left in the bulkhead passy side,i would cover this up incase of coolant loss/boil up, dont want to burn the front passengers feet.
and make sure the relay box is tied up away from the fans/rad.

Thanks Ady. I will take heed of your suggestions. I don't suppose you know how long the brushes are supposed to be when new? Having taken mine out I calculate they should be maybe 11mm or 12mm long and they are about 9mm currently. Does that sound like they are pretty worn or not?

Cheers,

Geoff

There was discussion in this thread http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 3&p=361779 on size and length. I would tend to believe Kirsty's estimate at 20mm as you could always file them down a bit if needed.

Thanks Geoff

Useful info on that thread. I have to say 20mm seems a lot. The length of the slot in the brush housing is 10mm and I assume the braided wire connector would be at the far end of that (with the brush extending a couple of mm further into the housing against the spring). The gap between the brush housing and commutator each side is approx. 2 or 3mm so I estimate the brush length would be maybe 12 or 13mm + 2mm 'behind' the braided wire connector, so 15mm max? Obviously I could cut and file them down if necessary, but if I get Solent Tools to sort them for me, I'm assuming they will make them to the length specified, so it would be good to have it figured out rather than have to adapt them afterwards.

hi , i have just fixed my front blower by replacing the brushes with these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130446124068? ... 1268wt_952
made to fit a bosch hammer drill , they are 7mm x 8 mm so just needed to sand 1mm of one side then sanded about 4mm off the length to make them a good fit , fan working like a good un now
