Bongo Fury

Sorry but I've been through the forum and cannot find the answer to this question.

When the power steering fluid is low...can I just top it up? Or do I need to bleed it all then top it up?

Background: My Bongo developed a horrible whiny groaning noise just the other day (only really noticable when turning the steering wheel) I read the forum and saw that I should check the power steering fluid. Upon checking I noticed that it is v low (a small amount in the bottom of the container)

Just top it up ..Dexron 111 or higher.Have a look for a leak at the rack while you are at it.

Is your .... horrible whiny groaning noise....when you were stationary or when you are moving,is your vehicle 4 wheel drive.If it is 4WD and you only get the noise when moving,it could be a CV joint.

commonly the rack leaks out of the top seal where the Universal joint connects to the steering column....... if there is a leak there the seal can be changed without removing the steering rack. However the seal comes as part of a full overhaul kit for £30 + .....
Some folks have had success with small weeps from that seal with Wynns Power Steering leak seal, it really makes the seals "swell" again....SO after the the top up.....check for a leak....

I had the atf fluid on my Bongo changed a year ago at Automotive Automatics, Automatic Transmission Specialists in Leith, Edinburgh. The pan dropped, the filter cleaned out and the whole system checked. Cost me £115.00 + vat but it was well worth it as my Bongo is now handling much better. I had a feeling that it was a long time since it was last done. Importers say that they change the cam belt for you, no mention of changing the aft fluid. The garage was recommended to me by Dandywarhol.

There must be similar places in Glasgow so you would be advised to get Bongo checked out if you are worried about your steering.

Topped her up and the problem seems to have resolved itself, I will keep an eye on it though just in case there's a leak

I've had a look but I'm really struggling to see where it is coming from. Is replacing the seals a big job? Any tech sheets for the have a go mechanic?

the top pinion seal is the usual culprit.......look under the Universal Joint from the steering column as it connects to the steering rack......
It can be changed in situ....
