Normal for most injuns until the internals heat up and expand a bit - also more diesel "knock" until the air is properly heated.

yea can be a bit disconcerting, can help to lessen it by adding some oil treatment, like the stuff with teflon to help with sound, smoke etc, I have used it often with diesel engines.

Usually worse with the veggie oil as well.

Veg has a lower calorific value than diesel so won't burn as well when warming up, so would tend to knock a bit more til hot.

I generally allow the engine to tickover for a couple of minutes before i set off chipvan, this seems to help a bit. (if convenient of course)

Looped systems can have a problem with air. As yours doesn't purge back to tank could settled air be part of the problem on start up?

tgp was right again...just when i thought i knew everything about my set up as well!!
It seems like it was air on diesel side,i found it out by accident,my wife ran out of diesel and wonderd why the bongo didnt drive well.after re filling start up tank i pumped up the fuel lines using a foot pump with gauge to see if any air or fuel came out,and bingo found a leak on a connection,it was prob where air was sucking in...
I used to have the purge timer set to 60 sec b4 shut down as the start up was a bit lumpy sometimes,i thought this was down to veg,but alis it was air,and with the air ingress must have made it worse with longer flush times.
The van now starts fantastic with a 30 sec flush and a little drive after flushing to mix diesel and any veg left in there, and quiet and smooth even from cold!!!
Well happy....and saving diesel!!!
cheers guys
