Engine Coolant Pre-Heater Questions

Hi guys,

Just bought a petrol Eberspacher hydronic. Plan is to fit it and use to pre-heat my engine coolant, akin to a kenlowe hotstart, but self contained as it runs of petrol rather than electric.

Reason for this is to reduce wear and tear on my engine, and ensure the car is warm before I set off. Should be nice on a cold winters morning as the heater will work straight away. Should also save me money as I have LPG so I should be able to run on this from the off. OK the unit will use a third of a litre of petrol for 20 mins warm up time, but that is likely to be less than the engine would use to warm up enough for the LPG to cut in.

Anyway, I recall on here someone fitting a hotstart but can't find it, probably because I'm being stupid. If anyone has advice or info on where best to tap into the cooling circuit for this I'd be most grateful.

Also the water pipes in and out on the heater unit are 20mm, the smaller coolant hose on the bongo is 16mm internal diameter so wondering if anyone knows best way around this, can you get reducers?

I will be getting most of the coolant hoses replaced at this time, and have taken the opportunity to buy some of the better Norma clips from Haydn.

Keep you posted on the progress but any advise gratefully recieved.

Andy

I did a search for 'engine preheat' and found THIS LINK IN THE MEMBERS AREA but I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for...

Hi,

Thanks for that. It does help a bit as I was thinking that flexi pipe under the passenger seat would be a good place to tap into the cooling system.

Hoping it will work out.

Thanks again.

hi in my opinion it would be best to tap into the heater circuit, either front or rear end,as this is the first loop to be warmed in normal operation, but it may work against you when trying to demist the screen or pre warm the cabin area etc,as the blowers may remove the heat your trying to maintain.if your struggling for reducers for your pipes etc give me a shout as there is a really good company that supply all this sort of stuff very near me.
