Evening folks, was wondering if anyone can give some advice on where to buy roof bars that will fit the gutters on the mushroom roof and how easy/difficult they are to fit. With a roof box on would the Bongo be under the 2.4 metre mark?

Don't get my Bongo until December :( , but can't help making plans!

Thanks for any advice.

I thought they sold bars in the Bongo Shop but couldn't see any... someone else may have a link to them. Other bars are also available, I did a search and found A FEW LINKS with info that should help you.

Thanks for the links folks. I can get on with making plans...

Is it just me or is December getting further away. Time seems to have slowed/gone into reverse since I put down the deposit on the Bongo  .

Hi, you mention 'Mushroom roof', is this an aftermarket roof, not the factory fitted one?

It's one of the roof options JAL provide. The Bongo is still in Japan and currently has an ordinary fixed roof. I thought the mushroom roof looked a good option but wasn't sure if you would need modified bars to fit. Phil at JAL said bars could be fitted when changing the roof but didn't seem to keen on the idea. He advised getting bars to fit the gutters.

Hi
I have the mushroom roof from JAL and was advised by Phil to get gutter fitted bars and do not screw anything onto the roof. i purchased thule van bars which fit onto the gutter. \the bars themselves are great plenty strong enough for any job.ONE problem though and this is a major gripe --you can not raise the roof when camping you have to remove bars and then riase roof . Now at first i did not think this would be a problem, but when camping and surfing with long boards though the summer it has now become a problem. What a ballache!! Have looked at the side bars and cross member assembly in the shop Just the job me thinks..... Any one got any tips/products on how to fit these properly, without damaging the integrity of the roof IE- leakage(s), etc

Hi beaglebongo,

Thanks for sharing your experience with the gutter fitted bars, sorry to hear about your aching balls  . I thought there may be issues with raising the roof and was wondering what the best options were.

Hopefully someone will be able to give you some advice on fitting side bars and cross member assembly.
