just checked the water level, (its fine) but noticed on the inside of the cap small specks which are coppery coloured, does this indicate that some one has put in some stop leak stuff or is my cap or something else rusting?

there are numerous steel pipes, biggest the 2 between engine and rad that will rust

especially if there is no anti freeze in it

the amount of gunk a flush out removes is amazing

It may be rust, it may be sealant... I've read that there are several different types so I guess it would be hard to tell. :) Someone on the forum very recently used sealant in theirs and described it as
(you can see the speckles of copper, it looked quite pretty!)
Maybe you could drain some out and have a closer look?
Have you flushed it recently? Is so, that may have dislodged something. If it is rust, I'd flush it (or flush again) and put fresh coolant in.

K Seal is known to contain copper particles......not saying that is what your experiencing, it is also known as a stop leak and is also used to great effect as a protection additive in some parts......
Don't jump to conclusions about it's use if indeed it has been used at all, someone may have only used it as a protection additive and that's no difference from using Slick 50/Wynns or whatever in other components.
I know of the garage trade who always use it when they have changed coolant on some of the well known troublesome vehicles like the Punto and the K series engine cars. They add it to prevent themselves being blamed any cooling system issues...

I've never heard of a garage using 'leak stopper' type products as a protection additive Mike. :) They say you learn something new every day and today I have. :) 8)

In that case jutwit, if it's not rust, maybe you could phone the garage and ask if they added something to the coolant?
