Bongo Fury

Hi guys my bongo seens to have got heavy on diesel over the last couple of weeks, i recently done a 200 mile trip and it cost me about £45 in fuel, I've had it in to a friends garage and on the MOT emmisions tester its reading 0.10 which for a 100,000 mile engine is an excellent reading, it would have to be 1.50 or above to fail the mot emmisions so i have a good 1.40 left to go before that a concern, i recently had the undertray off to jetwash the engine / gearbox and to clean out the 15 years of grime from the undertray and there is no signs of a diesel leak either in the form of puddles under the van or from around the pump which i checked today, it starts first turn of the key so the systems not losing any pressure over night, any ideas would a new air filter help or am i just being a paranoid tight arse ?

Recently I have been paying £1.25 per Litre which is 36 litres for 200 miles.
That's an average of 25.26 MPG, not bad depending on what sort of journey
you did and how fast you went.

Well from Huntingdon to lowestoft is a mixture of 50/50 A14 Dual carrigeway 65mph cruising then rural roads A134 from Bury St Edmunds to Lowestoft where the speed limit constantly varies from 30 to 60mph, Maybe it is just because fuel is getting so expensive and the fact that we're used to seeing 40+ mpg out of modern diesel cars, Thanx for your imput tho

Fifty quid per 200 miles is my average, unless out on a long motorway run with the trailer hitched to keep me out of the fast lane. My right foot tends to be rather heavy otherwise.

Tales of 30+mpg are in abundance on here but I can't see mine ever getting there.

The best I've seen was close to 300 miles on a late night trip back from Fort William.

However, the pure driving pleasure from cruising in the Bongo almost justifies the cost.

Tankful = 280 miles for me.

I don't particularly try to drive all that economically, but I do sort of try to keep it below 3000rpm.

Just changed oil and fuel filters. Van seemed a wee bit more lively when I did the fuel filter. Since then I've fitted a KnN air filter. Only driven 70 miles since then though - time will tell if they've made a difference.

Must remember to have a look at the banjo filter too.

Went to Devon last weekend so fully loaded.
369.7 miles on a full tank, filled up 59.18L cost £71.55 to re-fill so mpg 28.4

PS 1995 2.5L D AFT and 70 - 80 all the way home in fact Croyde to Gloucester 141 miles 2hrs 15min

I'd be doing cartwheels if I got that for on a tank.

If I feel so inclined, I'll pull an injector and see how worn they are. Has sorted out diesel fuel consumption for me in the past.

I went in to halfrauds today and bought some comma diesel system and injector cleaner and have sloshed that in with the fuel to see if that makes a differance, other factors are that i'm only doing a 5 mile trip each way to work so this time of year it could well be running rich for the duration of that journey, another factor is that while i'm only local i kepp the van between 1/2 and 1/4 tank which could well be the bit of the gauge that goes down quicker than the others.

Diesels don't run rich - they don't have a choke.

Short journeys (especially from cold) will always use more fuel anyway.

The only way to know what MPG you are getting is to do a full to full check using the exact miles and the exact fuel used - guessing from the movement of the fuel gauge is pointless.

Theres a link somewhere to a little gizmo that a member made that works out your mpg if you imput the data,tells you how far and how much per gallon/litre as well

Deisels do run rich as there fueling is run via the MAF sensor ( Mass Air Flow ) telling the ECU that its frickin cold so we're gonna need more fuel on the fire cap'n

The MAF is a modern day auto choke and every modern vehicle both petrol and diesel have them if the MAF gives incorrect readings to the ECU then the fueling will be wrong resulting in clouds of black smoke under acceleration for overfuelling and a lack of performance could be that the MAF is telling the ECU to underfuel.

I understood it that the Bongo fuelling system monitors intake pressure as opposed to mass airflow. Is this different on the newer (facelift?) models?

Definitely no MAF on mine.....

Whilst i haven't done a visual check the Bongo will have some sort of cold start device that pumps more fuel in when its cold otherwise the damn thing would never start on cold mornings.
