Whilst checking for diesel leeks today i noticed what looked like a long dipstick under the drivers seat, is this for the autobox level and if so whats the correct checking proceedure, engine running or engine off ?

Thanx, Peter.

I normally check engine running & up to temperature after a bit of a spin & running through the various drive selections... But could be wrong??!! :?

Thats a bit dubious being in drive when your not actually in conrtol of the vehicle but have your head under the drivers seat, what would the insurance company say if the van took off with no driver in it ?

put it in park,no need for drive.
the reason some say drive is because there is a bit of splashing in park.less in drive.

Hi,

This is a Quote from Alacrity a auto box expert..

Quote..I keep saying this but the oil level should be checked in Park. The level will read incorrectly if checked with it in gear as some fluid is then being used to apply clutches that wouldn't be on in Park. It may be easier in gear with less splash BUT IT IS NOT RIGHT, so by all means carry on doing it that way but just be aware that it is incorrect. I know I will now get a dozen folk saying 'I always do it like that' but it doesn't make it right. I 'do' auto transmissions for a living so I should know what I am talking about!!

Hope this helps.

Cheers
