Bongo Fury

i reckon my oil pump could be needing replaced. on longer jouneys oil light starts to flicker on and a ticking noise can be heard along with increased engine noise (sounds more like a diesel).

after a break its back to its smooth petrol performane and light doesn't go on. noticed it's very noisey when its a cold start but this goes away after 5 mins

oil level is definitely full checked twice

Where do you live?

Not heard of an oil pump going before on a Bongo (I thought they were generally simple robust things that v. rarely failed). Might be best checked out by a Bongo specialist? I wouldn't drive it too much until fault identified. Good luck.

have you tried an oil flush,or checking the sump strainer (oil pick up) if they have one??

Oil level might be ok but what about the oil itself? have you had it changed/filter etc? I've never known an oil pump to fail (words of doom!),usually oil pumps struggle when the oil is cold/more viscous not once its warmed up?

Yup, it all seems consistent with oil whose viscosity (thickness) is becoming low as it warms up (old oil, contaminated and/or broken down), and maybe an oil pressure sensor that is a bit tired.

Hi kickinthebongos,

You should get your oil pressure checked,also the by-pass valve.If you are getting a rattle from the engine on high revs It could be wear on main bearings/shaft.You should get higher oil pressure when cold.

Check your oil strainer i found horrors in the sump of my v6 but i didn't have a prob with oil feed as such just a prob that i have now got to the bottom of after taking it to bits . I have heard of a couple with oil flow to the driver side head on the v6 being a prob I do believe that Ian had a oil light prob on his maybe he could expand and give his experiances maybe it will shed some light

In a way i hope i am wrong but i had this problem on an old bedford cf van and it turned out to be the big end bearings on the way out. I was told because of the wear on them oil forces its way through which drops the oil presure slightly and results in the oil light filckering on.

good point ----now my memory has had a jolt,ive seen this where a failure elsewhere in the engine has led to low oil pressure in the system.

thanks guys got a filter,oil change and flush done. light hasn't come back on yet

there is a whining sound when it starts from cold though. this is a different sound from the tappets and sounds more like when a car is reversing . it lasts a few minutes then disapears and doesn't come back until a cold start again.
