2.5 l diesel ,lately i,ve had to have several attemps every time i want to start the engine.
i turn the ignition key to start ,wait for the yellow light to go out, turn more ,and nothing happens, except for a very quite sound like a small electric motor running, this continues to run for about 10-15 secs even after removing the key ?

so, my questions are :-

1) whats that noise ??

2) where is the starter motor relay ??

3) where is the starter motor

my thinking is either the relays not working

or the brushes in the starter motor are defunct

unless someone has a better idea ??? :( :(

all help very much appreciated

Starter is under drivers seat, held in place by 3 14mm bolts which come through from behind the gearbox (screw forwards), a 12mm holding the main power cable and a push spade connection for the solenoid, its a common fault, remove the starter and strip the solenoid and using a refurb kit (app £15 from fleabay), replace the contacts and plunger and you'll have a new starter. They stp working because the plunger/contacts become scarred and burnt from the current spikes and the contacts in particular wear to different levels and stop making contact.

I just ordered the kit this week because I've recently been getting occasional clicks with no action. Phoned at 4pm and it was in my porch next morning with basic* delivery!

Watch this video on how to do it:

* Just checked and it was Royal Mail First Class in fact but that was the more basic of the two offered.
