Bongo Fury

Hi, got in the bongo this morning and drove off.

About 20 metres up the road i could feel the passenger rear wheel 'slipping'. I thought it was just a bit off ice so went a bit further and the slipping became a juddering so i stopped.

I did a few tests, under acceleration the real wheel feels like it slipping/juddering - when its just free wheeling its fine. Around corners its really bad with some gas - when its free wheeling round a corner its fine.

Its the same in reverse so i think its the rear axle? - i'm not that mechanically minded : (

any suggestions as to what it might be?

Forgot to mention i had 4 new tyres about a month ago....

Is this on a slippery road?

Some juddering under power when turning quite sharp is normal as your limited slip dif will be limiting slip. Shouldn't do it in a straight line though.

Each rear wheel is connected to the middle of the axle, the bulge in the middle.
An arrangement of gears/cogs make the rear wheels drive and rotate at different speeds when cornering.
It does sound like something may have broken in the differential, the bulge in the middle.

If it comes to it "new" axles can be bought.
Hopefully it will be an easier fix.

The type of rear axle/differential on a Bongo is basically like you find on most Landrovers, unlike a modern front wheel drive car,
so if you know a mechanic who does Landys they'll be able to give it a good look.

I take mine to a local Landrover specialist, mostly because they're closest

Edit; just read bongomtber's post. That's true but you may not have an LSD, look for a yellow sticker on Diff to confirm LSD.

Its a 4wd bongo - i'll have a look at the axle to see if it has a sticker on : )

It always has slipped a bit on full lock - i thought it might the the diff so associated it with being 'normal'.

I live on the Isle of Wight, so good Bongo freindly garages are a bit scarce, so i'll have a gander for Land rover specialists instead.

If it is the diff and its beyond economical repair how easy will it be to get a new one?

Have you double checked the wheel nuts are tight?

Didn't know Bongos possibly had an LSD.

Is that front and rear or just rear?

Is there any other way to tell apart from the sticker? I cant see a sticker still being there after 15 years.

Ill do that when I can get to the VIN, under a foot of frozen snow at present.

Senior moment there, of course the VINs on the log book.

Normal diff.
