Lights problem

Post by bigscottishdave » Sun Dec 05, 2010 4:06 pm

Hi there, I am having a few problems with my lights.

I was driving along at night and the rear lights, indicators and interior lights went out. The front main beam stayed on and the electric windows still worked. I have checked all the fuses and they are ok. I have also checked all the wiring at the back of the dash and there are no loose wires. I am completely stuck. I should also say that the "doors" light on the dash is faintly lit now. Is that indicator to a specific problem?

Cheers

That combination of lights out points towards the BTN fuse blowing under the bonnet, not a common occurrence however;

It actually covers;

Hi Geoff, thanks for that. It seems a very important fuse, to say the least!

I'll see if i can get a hold of one and see if that does the trick.

Thanks again

Check that your doors are locked as well, as that fuse covers the auto door locking circuit as well !

Sounds like the indicator stalk to me as the lights and indicators are all on that one stalk, fords of the 90's used to suffer with this and a temp / permanent fix was to hold a wrag behind the end of the stalk spray some wd40 into the small gap between the movable bit and the stalk then turn the lights on and off 20 ish times to get the wd40 to clean the internal contacts as they become tarnished over the years.

Keep us posted :wink:

Fuse is on order so I have my fingers crossed. I'll check the doors too!

I'll try that wd40 solution too.

Cheers everyone

Doesn't surprise me that the fuse is OK, I suspect that M 8ONGO might be right about the stalk ...

Its usually position 1 on the stalk ie sidelights which is why you lose rear lights and dash lights but the headlights are unaffected tho if you look closely the front side lights will also be out and for this reason people assume that its fuse and not switch.

Hi guys it is definitely not the fuse as new one arrived this afternoon and it made no difference.
Im about to do the WD40/stalk trick.

Fingers crossed again!!

Hi guys,

Im just back in from trying the WD40 solution to no avail. Should I take the covering for the steering column and have a look underneath to see if I can better access to the connections?

Also, the interior lights and central locking are still not working despite the change of fuse. Will a stalk problem affect these as well?

OK well can you check this fuse again then;

That fuse is common to the Internal lights and the door locks, but you said you had checked so the next fuse up the chain was BTN, but just wonder ...... :?:

I'll check the fuse on the inner fuse panel again in the morning to see if it has went and I'll get back to you.

Cheers for all your help

Hi guys, I checked the fuse that you suggested and it was ok. I have sprayed the stalk with WD40 but with no success

Do you have any other suggestions?

Sounds like you need to dig a bit deeper in that case, do you have a multi-meter to measure voltage current etc. ? If the fuses to both the Interior Lights and Doors aren't blown then either the wiring is broken or you have more than one fault, the lights and doors use different chassis connections so its unlikely / less likely to be that causing a problem.

Are all the interior lights off ?
Is there anything else not working, check ALL the lights round the vehicle, dashboard lights , windows, blinds, radio etc.
Do you have a leisure battery ?
