Bongo Fury

Car has been stinking of diesel fumes inside and the problem was cured when the back box fell off.
It has been too cold and wet to get underneath for a wee look.
Now I need a new back box and was wondering if anyone has a cheap price or an alternative back box solution.
It is not any noisier or lacks any power without it and a smaller box or straight through would work.
Or just the best price for a new exhaust and hopefully in stock.
Genuine mazda is for the rich only.

Or just fit a straight through bit of exhaust.

Do as others have done and just get a straight through bit of pipe made up to fit twixt broken end of pipe and rear hanger.

Most turbos react well to a free flowing exhaust and if the turbo is doing it's job properly it will have extracted a lot of the energy from the flow anyway.

If you really want a box, don't bother with the half tonne oil drum fitted as standard, just go to a good local accessory shop and buy one of the aftermarket straight throughs sold in such places for £30-40. A local exhaust fitter (not one of the big chains who can't spell) should be able to make up a link pipe out of a bit of scrap exhaust if you ask nicely.

If I could get a bolt/clip on straight through, that would be ideal.
Someone could make money with that idea.
The Ebay one is the one that I spotted, cheapest on the web.
Is there a gasket in the join or is it a wee bit of exhaust paste needed.

Just need to find a length of flexi at the factors.
the pipe is broken just at the box and should just need a wee bit of flexi to the rubber hanger.

The tailpipe for a Ford Connect van is the right bore to fit the remains of the Bongo pipe just a little inboard of where it breaks from the silencer.

The bends are about right to clear the axle and end up poking out near one of the rear hangers. It will need another hanger, jury rigged near the new join.

The outer end needs chopping off short and decorating with a stainless trim and one of the hanging lugs needs cutting off to make it look smart.

I've just gone back to having a rear box, as I needed a new centre section anyway, and it is only marginally quieter than a straight pipe.

What I will do as soon as the weather gets warmer is get underneath and fit an additional hanger near the point where they understandably break due to having a heavy load unsupported. There is a handy gap between the underside of the floor and a cross member where I attached some stainless wire holding a rubber link down to the joining clamp* which I used to take the strain and centralise the joint when I fitted the Ford Connect pipe.

*There are some hard to source 'U' bolts in existence that have a hanging spigot welded to them. Alternatively use 'extended leg' U bolts in the clamps to provide an extension to mount the rubber link onto. You can buy a lot of ingenuity for the price of an unnecessary back box.
