Bongo Fury

oh dear had a call from the wife bongo wont start.

there is 11.9 vols accross battery,

got a new jump start power pack,on there and still nothing.

Is it ok to jump start with a leisure battery??

anyone got any ideas??

I recently had my main battery drain itself due to a short circuit in the fog lamps and just did one jump start from the leisure battery. Started it instantly.
Sounds like something was left switched on, a short has developed or the battery has lost a cell.
Trying to jump from the leisure battery once will not do any great harm. Just do not make a habit of it.

started it but only charging at 9.(something)volts...

but after a while the volts were about 13..

It looks like its charging now..13 volts.

could it just be a flat battery,and now ok?

is it best to run a seperate wire and fuse direct to leisure battery??? and a switch to turn it off! when not in use

The stereo will need a switched live supply and a permanent supply.
Switched live is so it works with the ignition on and permanent so it remembers your radio stations between uses.
Normally fed from red and yellow wires in the iso connector. Theses can be swapped over as needed on most iso connectors.
My bongo's supplies were both permanent so I ran a separate switched live from elsewhere to stop the drain when the ignition is off.
Have a read of the manual that came with the unit and it will show which supply should be switched.
Does the radio switch off when you turn off the engine?

Nope stays on when u turn off the key,

Then it is drawing power with the ignition off, waiting for you to press the on button.
You will have to re-wire it to a switched live supply.
Have a look at page 28 of the instruction manual. It shows the wiring connections.

as we want it to be om when not driving ive just ran it through a tiny rocker switch.

And the perm live that goes though a little transformer is still on.

so now i can switch off the main power and leave on the power for keeping data on ect.

Does this sound ok?

Yep iam ok with multi meter have found a swich ignition live,but i thought if i used this i coulnt use it when we are camping and parked up?

Most batteries sold as 'leisure batteries are in fact quite suitable for starting and are used for this by yachties who tend to look after batteries a bit better than car owners. Leisure batteries are not optimised for starting but are designed to be used for starting if required, so you are always better with a proper starting battery. Proper deep cycle or traction batteries should not be used for starting except in emergencies.

Its all ok this morning after a charge up and drive last night.

On tickover its charging at about 12v

now got a swicth in dash i can flick to cut power off to unit when not needed,and back on again when engine is off(ie camping ect)

The voltage across the battery terminals at tickover should be about 14 volts.

Engine not running = 12.5 plus
Engine running 14.5 'ish volts

Less than this running (12 volts) suggests a alternator fault
