slightly squeaky on startup

it sounds like a slightly squeaky belt on startup when its cold. I'm not sure if its something that I should really deal with or live with. I'm just about to book the bongo in for some TLC (waxoiling etc) and want to know what to ask for them to check.

Possible number one manifold stud broken, that is the sound it makes when it has gone.
I hope its just a belt, ask them to check it out for you.

It's a squeak that goes away if you rev it gently off idle and it squeaks when on idle (should have mentioned that!) and so I am 75% sure it's belts. i.e. at idle it sounds like squeak-squeak-squeak-squeak-etc. I haven't been around in daylight to lift the cover and have a wee look inside.

thanks for the tip with the manifold studs and thanks platty for letting me know that they've been done (it's a fabulously maintained vehicle). What's the consequence of a broken manifold stud? I can't quite figure out how that would squeak, unless it's a metal-on-metal squeak when driving over bumps etc.

There is a fact sheet in the members area explaining about the manifold stud, though it mainly occurs at start up then quietens down when things are heated up.

For squeaky belts it could be that they just need adjusted, or there is something on the pulleys.

A quick check is to spray some WD40 or similar on them, if the squeaking stops then it is the belts to blame!

I read the PDF and still unsure. If you have a spare moment, have a quick listen and look at this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yM6ZrozVp4Q

and see what you think. I may well be over-reacting because I am known to be able to detect the difference between vinyl, mp3's and ogg vorbis music formats.

when you rev it, the noise goes away and upon idle it comes back. there was a load of salt and grit on the chassis members that i cleaned off so there is a chance that it could be that.

Hi Rapid,
thats exactly the same as mine have tightened the belts which made mine a little better. Was thinking it was the water pump bearings but took the belts off to check it and it was sweet. So if anybody can help there will be two happy people presuming its not terminal.

yep -its the same with me also -very similar noise . The funny thing is that some days the noise isnt there but mostly the noise is there on tickover. I have new belts to fit but dont know if that will help. Guess I will have to take it to my spannerman and see if he can suss it out.

does anyone have any tips for using a grease gun on those bearings. I'm a bit hesitant to just spray with wd40/gt85 because they are quite short term solutions. I don't really want to have to take everything apart - but I aimagine there are grease ports hidden away or something.

after some liberal spraying of GT85 on the alternator spindle the noise did change - I didn't stretch all the way round for every pump etc and will do so.

noise = friction = bad = <mpg = >£

Mine has done this (on and off but much more on than off) since I bought it over 4 years ago. I worried at first that my water pump may be on the way out, but it (and everything else) has remained fine, so now I don't worry about it, though I can imagine trying to convince a buyer of that if/when I sell it. I've heard others in the past on here say they have the same noise. Mine's a diesel BTW 8)

it turned out that the bearings in the water pump where knackered and so a new waterpump and new belts (while we're at it) have completely solved the problem. It also explained why I was loosing a small amount of water/coolant

thanks for the tips.
