Fuel Gauge - misbehaving

History:
For the last few months fuel gauge would only read as far a half, even with a full tank
Bongo just back from getting new head gasket
Fuel Gauge stuck on zero, even with full tank
What I have tried:
Following treads and fact sheet I took up the flooring, exposed fuel gauge compartment.
Tried shorting the two cables with no resulting movement on the gauge
Assumed problem must be in electrics away from sensor.
Something else interesting:
I had noticed that when the Bongo came back from the garage that the ash tray light (next to hand break) was not working.
Changed the bulb which now works and straight away the fuel gauge went up to half way (with a full tank)
Turned the engine on and off and now the fuel gauge is again stuck at zero (ash tray light working still)
Before I put the floor back and pulling random wires from under the dash board...could someone please tell me what is the obvious thing I am missing.
Thanks as always
Tim

Poor earth on the sender unit is a common problem, worth duplicating it before you look further.

Hi Bob, yep thought that also. However would this not be different since when i shorted the two wires there was no change?

OK, so I have followed the earthing guidelines and...
Now the gauge is saying 3/4 full (this could be correct amount)
However it stays up at 3/4 even with the ignition turned off and even with the battery disconnected.
Could this be OK and where is it getting the power to read 3/4 even with no battery?
Also when it made its initial way up to 3/4 full it took about 5 minutes for the needle to crawl up.

5 Mins sounds a little bit too long but otherwise it sounds like its working as it should

Yep, it normally hold the last position on the gauge with the ignition off...
Is it me or was this threads initial post tagged on here??

Depends when you looked. It may be that I posted on here instead of the other thread, so I deleted my post and reposted where it should have been

Maybe that's what you saw
