Heating - Modes

Hi
this isn't the easiest to explain......so please bear with me
Background - new radiator installed (looked like previous owners had used RadWeld or similar
), system flushed, refilled, blead properly.
In the rear, the heating is working as it should - variable temperature at each "mode". However out of the front I'm a bit stumped - when the mode is straight on, single arrow, the temperature of the air doesn't vary much (possibly slightly hotter out of the side vents?) until you change the temperature up to 30/31 and then you get the hot air you'd expect. In any other mode we get variable temperature hot air, including when the mode is pointing to your feet and straight out.
Anyone any idea why this mode would not provide variable temp air?
Does something "extra" happen when you dial the temperature up above 30?
Cheers
