Oil on the air filter

Hi all, I'm worried I may be asking a stupid question but here goes anyway.....

I was preparing to change the diesel fuel pump seals this evening (diesel leaking across the right side of the engine etc). When I took the air filter cover off and removed the internal air filter it was (or appeared to be) full of gunked black oil? I also noticed that the small pipe that runs from the air filter pipe to a sensor to the right of the EGR is broken.

Is it likely that the leaking diesel has been drawn into the air filter?

no i doubt it.
the oil in the air filter may have run back through the air pipe which goes round the back of the head, where the rocker breather pipe goes into the air pipe.very unlikely though, unless you have a pipe off further round towards the turbo. or it may be egr gung.
cannot imagine which pipe you are refering to re the egr, any pictures?.

Two thoughts:

*How old is the existing filter? Hard to know how extensive the problem is without knowing how quickly the filter is getting soiled.

* Think laterally and buy a buy a K&N metal filter as they have to be oiled anyway in order to work

Mike, NB, thanks for your replies =D> . I think now the air filter is just really old (the garage said a full service had been completed prior to me picking it up last month) -do I believe them  Regarding the broken tube further down the air pipe I've taken a photo a created a fresh topic in the tech forum http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=47483 as it seems to be an unconnected issue.
