hi all

i want to get some new bulbs for the front headlights ( the bright ones )

i do not know what they are called - but i know you can get the brighter ones advertised

has anyone had any experience with these and where did you get them from

ebay etc ?

Lidl often do 50% brighter Tesla H4 bulbs at a very reasonable price.

Be careful what you buy the lenses of the headlights are plastic.

Dont they need to be UV filtered or something to protect the lens from clouding?

I got some H4 superwhite xenon from fleebay, work a treat

What would be the limit do you think for the bulbs? I hope I haven't gone TOOOO bright

The main problem is when you put full beam on and are still parked, it then gets too hot on the headlamp.
now i know most people don't have full beam on most of the time ,but something to be wary about.

I have Philips Extreme bulbs fitted as discussed here.

They are the standard wattage - 55W, and UV protected so OK for plastic lenses.

At £42 for the pair they are way more expensive than the Tesla ones from Lidl, and probably no brighter. They've lasted a year so far with no issues, but then I expect any car headlight bulb to last a good few years.....

I drove my son's car the other night. Since he's a teenager, he has fitted HID replacement bulbs - against my advice. I understand the legal situation with these (self levellers and washers required, etc), and the technical issues with using a linear light source within a reflector / lens designed for a point light source and they should be pretty crap, and have loads of stray light scatter etc. However, I have to admit that the light down the road on dip and main was really impressive, and when parking against a wall the dip cut-off shapes look OK with no scatter above. They will probably fail an MOT, and need the standard bulbs swapped back for that - and by then end of the year they will automatically fail an MOT. But I was so impressed I am considering buying a set. Not much heat out the front either....

I was surprised too Dave... I, like you have advised against retro fitting HID kits for use with lights designed for halogen bulbs. But as a last resort i HAD to do something about he poor light output from the 100watt headlamp bulbs i'd recently fitted.

I've got to admit, the beam cut off points with the HID kit is a sharp as anything, and if the headlights are adjusted "down" a bit, then glare doesn't seem to be an issue.
