Mason alarm - installation warning

I bought a Mason alarm and started to fit it. Got to the point where I had to slacken off three screws at the back of the instrument panel as per the diagram supplied with the kit. One of them (terminal IG) just turned in its hole, but didn't unscrew. Being a sensitive type I didn't resort to butchery, but contacted Dave Mason and asked if I could attach the wire to an alternative terminal screw, also marked IG. This he said would be OK, but warned against overtightening, as one of the screws went into a pillar in the gauge to which was attached a fine spring. Overtightening it could break it.

I put everything back together, but although the alarm worked, the temperature gauge didn't. It appears that my 'difficult' screw is the one attached to the pillar, which was possibly already damaged - hence the reason it just kept turning without unscrewing.

The reason for this post is two-fold. First, a warning that if you fit one of these alarms be alert to any screw which shows no resistance when you start to unscrew it. Secondly are there any heroes out there who can suggest a solution to my problem. A second hand instrument panel looks likely as I've failed to find a gauge.

Yeah, you got to to be a little bit careful. I had a similar problem (http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... lit=+mason), but managed to do a repair job with a soldering iron. Fine ever since.
