Roof light flashing when driving.

I know this link is of a similar nature to one below (being to do with the roof), however, I thought it deserved its own post as it is to do with the roof in the housed postion.

Today I noticed my roof light was flashing whilst on a short journey, now this has never happend before.

There was no beeping and I had not just housed the roof. I have had the roof up and down a few times in the last month to lube everything up and air out the tent after the winter etc.

This has certainly assisted in the raising of the roof (particularly with regards to the not being fully 'erect' sitiation on the other post).

So I decided to raise my roof (once I'd stopped of course) roof raised fully up without assistance and then fully housed but the light kept flashing and the beeps continued whilst holding the button as if it hadnt housed properly. A few more attempts later and no change.

So I raised the roof a little and looked at the offside front micro switch. There was a bit of lube around it so cleaned it off. Pressed the switch manually and the flashing roof light on the dash goes out. Does this mean that the switch isnt being depressed when the roof is housed or is that far too simple an answer?

Oh and sedondly is it ok to drive still? The roof aint gonna fly up on me is it?

All thoughts gracefully welcomed.

Cheers

Matty

i've driven mine with a flashing roof light ever since I bought it. No probs (microswitch is duff) and I can hear the rooflocks going home fine

That solves one thing cheers Mike.

But I dont think the switch is duff, it knocks the flashing light off when I manually press it so it obviously works.

They micro switches are single hole fixing aren't they ? I think you might find that there may be some play in the fixing which will affect the exact point that the roof operates it, you will probably find that a little adjustment of the fixing will cure the problem.

No yours isn't, but MINE is :(

Could be it is not being switched off by whatever slots into it and is supposed to do that?

had this problem with my old AFT, my switch was ok too, its the thin metal bar that works the switch that is the problem.

when the roof slides against it the thin metal bit it activates the micro switch but over time it bends slightly so no longer has the strength to keep the limit switch down so the light on the dash goes off initially but then starts to flash again

all you need to do is lift the roof about a foot so you can access the switch and with a pair of long nose pliers manipulate the metal strip so it produces more pressure on the switch when the roof is down

also i seem to remember the little bush bit that presses against the metal strip can be very slightly loose so check the screws holding that first.

hope this helps

Aha Mazabon,

A very good idea, I will attack that tomorrow. What is it that actually slides into the gap to press the thin metal strip? Is it located on top of the moving arm thing that slides along the rails?

Awesome dude

AAGGHHH I spoke too soon.

Ok so here goes, Mazabon, the diagram you posted looked like the set up I had but as you can see from my photo the plastic bit opposite to the microswitch does not move.

This is the weird bit, so if I lift the roof about 10 inches, I get the normal beeps and roof light flashing. If i manually depress the micro switch, the beeps go and the light stops flashing. So I have tried the remedies on this thread. eg, bending the metal flap on the switch but this did not work. I have even tried packing the switch against the plastic bit to have the switch permenantly depressed. This stops the beeps and flashing light but as soon as the roof is house the flashing light now comes back on.

As my pic shows, there must be something that slides between the micro switch and the plastic thing to activtate it. what and where is this thing?

Help!!!

sorry it was so long ago, i couldnt remember exactly how it worked but basically the little bush bit is somehow supposed to press that microswitch down

if you look at the little bush bit, i believe it has a spring loaded bit inside it.

something that is part of the roof rail mechanism slides along to depress the spring loaded bit in the bush down to make it make contact with the metal bit on the microswitch to activate it, the problem is that the roof is all quite finely tuned so it compresses the rubber seal just enough but over time things wear and i would guess the roof is able to just pull away slightly again so the microswitch releases again

sorry for confusion, like i said it was a long time ago #-o

i didnt get it right first time though, took a lot of adjusting and re adjusting, just bend the metal bit so it makes maximum contact with the bush, its hard to explain but you need to try to picture how it opperates, try going up and down a bit but watch it happening, get someone else to to the button pressing, keep your hands well clear though

good luck with it

Also Had the same fault and there is another couple of switches at the front of the roof mechanism (they look like door pin switches)

The fault seems to come and go whilst recently having my kayak loaded on the AFT :?

My flashing light on the dash is currently hidden with some black tape at the moment til I get round to messing with the switches..

Cheers Steve.

P.s not seen the roof taking off yet [-o<
