Mark1: Cloth or naugahyde interior, orange indicator strip to the rear, black plastic interior auxiliaries etc.
Mark2: Same generalized shape with slightly facelifted detail items... Clear indicator strip, velour interior, slightly revised switchgear, lighter grey plastics used on ashtrays, window clips, interior lights, sliding door step insert, handbrake, auto shifter, electric window switches, seatbelt anchor clips, etc etc... Later mark 2's had revised dash, and other detail trim changes.
Mark3: A more defined visual alteration to the exterior, lights, scuttle, bumpers, brought more in line with the rest of the Mazda family of vehicles. Introduction of the "aero" model, with revised freetop rear cusp (instead of tailgate mounted spoiler) and a smoked panel at the front of the freetop. Introduction of HID/bi-zenon headlamps. There was various colour omissions and additions from mark to mark also. Freetops raised higher than on the mark 1&2.
Check out this post as well.

The roof on a 2000 model raises higher than an aero, for some reason for only 1 year they were higher then went back down slightly.
There are several mechanical/electrical changes over the changes, each has their own common problems
