Ignition Key Transponder

Hi all,

Does/should a '99 Bongo have a transponder in the ignition key? I took the key to Timsons, he checked and said there was no transponder in the key, and he thought all vehicles after 92/93 should have them.

As an aside, I've been struggling to get a replacement key made, I've been waiting a week for Timsons to order in the correct type key, I got one off of ebay which turned out to be too short, I tried our local key cutter who did not have the right type blank... any recommendations? We're off to France next week, ideally with a spare key! :?

Thanks for clearing it up for me, I did suggest that Japanese imports may not follow the same rule...

Now just to get a key sorted! ;)

In most cases Timpson or any other keycutter can get a blank of the shelf and it will work just fine, but a few of us have a key that its a little more difficult to get a blank for. I tried two different Timpsons and an independent keycutter, taking back the key twice each time for them to try and get it right. They all failed. The key would either open the doors OR turn on the ignition, not both. I eventually managed to get a spare key cut by an old school keycutter at a show using manual tools. It took him 5 attempts! The key looks like a dog's breakfast now though.

Once I got a working spare key cut, I spent time comparing the collection that I had accrued - some working the door, some working the ignition, and posted the various dimensions on the forum. I found that the problem was partly due to the length of the gulley in the blanks being used. Unfortunately this post was pruned, so the details are now lost. Details which I think would have been useful to those of us having the oddball key.

I wanted to get another key cut, and came across this same ebay item you refer to. The dimensions are almost exactly the same as my key, except mine is slightly shorter (by about 1mm). So from the picture and the measurements I thought I was in luck. However when the key arrived there was one important thing wrong with it - the taper at the end. You can't see it in the picture in the ebay listing, but it means that the key would be no good for my particular key, so Ive never bothered getting it cut. So before you order this item, check the end of the key matches. Nothing against the seller, I'm sure I could have got a refund, but It wasn't worth the bother, and the blank itself is good quality.

If it helps anyone who is having trouble trying to figure out why they can't get a key cut when everyone else say it's no problem, I can take a photo of the key ends.

Hi dvisor,

Looks like I have the same problem, I did order off ebay, what looked like a perfect blank, only for the local cobblers to say much the same as you have detailed. My local motor factor tried with a standard off the shelf key, to no avail!

To be honest, for now I would be happy to have 2 spares, one to open the door, and one to turn the ignition!

Three cheers for modern technology. Designed mainly to relieve us of our cash.

My partner's car has this type of key, which started cracking at a narrow point and needed replacing before the unthinkable happened. We got an ordinary blank cut and use that for entering and starting the car with the old one hanging adjacent to it.

On rare occasions the car won't start, I suspect due to the 'umpteen other pieces of metalwork hanging on the keyring and upsetting the near field. Then the cracked key has to be used if we want a result.

I have emphasied to her (i.e. gone on and on until I am blue in the face) that the consequences and ramifications of the key finally breaking off in the lock don't bear thinking about (especially as it is likely to become my problem rather than hers) and that the key breaking in the lock is far more likely to happen due to the applied weight of all the dangling metalwork, indeed this was probably the original cause of the weakness.

All in all, I curse the advent of these transponders and they are on my 'walk away' list when looking at potential purchases - along with alloy wheels, colour coordinated bumpers, air conditioning and electric windows! Oh, and the latest curse, inaccessible light bulbs!

Well,

Went to another independent cobblers, and he sorted me out first time. It was one of the shelf, but he extended the key, by removing some of the plastic at the end to get more metal, if that makes sense?

Anyway, works a treat for opening the doors and starting the ignition, so the world is right again!

=D> Sounds a bit like what the "successful" guy had to do to mine. He had to cut off half of the head and also extend the gulley running up the centre right up into the bit you handle.
